Virtual Experience Centre

An immersive virtual experience centre helps Motion Mapping showcase projection mapping tech to global clients

We worked with projection mapping experts Motion Mapping to create an interactive 360 virtual showroom tour. Used around the world for events, guerrilla marketing, product displays and more, prospective customers can get hands-on with their tech solutions in their London showroom. It’s all guided, showcased and championed by founder Stuart Harris, and it works.

But unfortunately not everyone can get to London, so we brought it to them.

We created an immersive and interactive branded experience centre, featuring 19 different product demos, filmed entirely in 360 video, and guided by Stuart, that allows potential clients to see Motion Mapping’s tech in all its glory.

From touch walls to switchable glass, and building projection to interactive tables, static webpages, flat images and video guides just don’t cut it. Motion Mapping’s services need more than that to demonstrate their efficacy. They need interactivity and real-world examples to help prospective customers realise what these solutions can bring to their campaigns.

So we visited their Experience Centre in London and captured 360 video of both the space itself and the experiences to create a virtual tour. In real life, Stuart guides visitors through each product, and we needed to include that personal touch here.

Users enter the virtual experience, and after they’ve heard Stuart’s intro, can explore any of 19 different offerings in any order. They can click to look and move around, and hotspots show them how to interact.

For example, the switchable glass wall demonstrates how surfaces can be brought to life. The user can click on different sections of the window and see visualisations and videos, as well as how it can function as clear glass. Likewise, they can change the wall projections in the Immersive Room, or watch Stuart demonstrate their interactive tables or touch walls, and RFID installations.

But that’s not all; the virtual tour can do things not possible in the real world. For example, each installation can include video content that shows real case studies of the tech in use. Whether it’s Christmas projection shows on the Queens Hotel in Leeds, guerrilla marketing across London, or a 9ft bottle of Lancôme Idôle perfume that was projection mapped during a launch event.

After finishing a demo, users can navigate forward or backwards, free-roam the space, return to the main menu or bring up a contact form.

Creating a virtual tour of this quality comes with challenges.

Firstly, the projections are the heroes of the experience, but capturing them within the space is tough. Filming 360 video means exposing for the whole scene, but dimly lit studios and bright projections don’t make good bedfellows. That meant we had to do a lot of testing with lighting and projection strength to make sure the space itself wasn’t too dark, and the projection wasn’t blown out, losing the colour and vibrancy that are so important.

Secondly, we had to design the interactions and transitions to feel natural and maintain the feeling of the real tour. Lastly, with plenty of weighty 360 video, transitions and additional content, the entire virtual tour needed lots of optimisation to make sure it works seamlessly on any browser.

We think we’ve done Motion Mapping’s Experience Centre proud, and Stuart agrees:

“Amazing! I hadn’t anticipated how popular the 360 showroom would be.”

We’ve worked with major brands and organisations around the world to create interactive tours, sales tools and virtual experiences.
